NFL’s combine, being held in Indianapolis, is showcasing hundreds of football players who desire the privilege of going professional. How players perform at the combine can make the difference between a career in sports or a desk job, or it can make the difference between a low and a high draft pick. The ability of the combine to change lives has been demonstrated over and over again. Players thought not to have what it takes to play in the NFL have changed hearts and minds through stellar combine performances. Tim Tebow Tim Tebow is ranked fourth among the quarterbacks and is expected not to be a first round pick. Tebow is trying to change his throw to make his delivery faster in response to concerns that he won’t be able to work against professional grade defensive plays. Tebow also has to overcome concerns over his dismal performance at the Senior Bowl. You’ll want to watch Tebow because this combine can either make or break this promising quarterback’s career aspirations. Taylor Mays A great candidate for the pros in 2008, Mays wants to be the top safety in the draft, but some people think the former USC player is overrated. Mays is in terrific athletic condition, although his form and tackling skills might need some work. He’s working with a nutritionist to help manage his weight and his 40 yard time wasn’t the best, but was still impressive. Dez Bryant This wide receiver from Oklahoma State is a great candidate to be the first one picked in the draft. Some aren’t too impressed by his failure to run the 40 at the combine. Other analysts are still hung up on how his suspension for most of the 2009 season for lying to the NCAA will affect his play. The truth is that Bryant has a lot to prove at the combine and he’s not off to a very good start. Let’s hope he’ll get things together and do some work else he’ll be left out of the top 5. Sam Bradford Bradford could have been near the top for quarterbacks if he chose to go for the pros in 2009. Now he has a record of injury against him. What? He’s not going to throw at the combine? Sam has a lot to gain from a good performance at the combine, but he also has a lot to lose. So far he’s a bit low on the barometer, but analysts think he still can be the number one quarterback pick. Brandon Graham Graham made some good impressions at the Senior Bowl and he has a great chance at the combine to prove his mettle. He has stated he wants to be a top 10 pick, so he’ll have to show that he has the ability to compete. He has to adapt from a 4-3 defensive end to a 3-4 outside linebacker.
